Remember Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier, the ex “President for Life” of Haiti? If you lived there before his flight from justice in 1986, you couldn’t forget. Now, he has a new supporter: anti-Clinton GOP disgrace Bob Barr.
If you don’t remember, Duvalier was Ronald Reagan’s pet dictator of Haiti who killed and tortured thousands of his people, siphoning off untold millions of dollars from Haiti’s treasury into Swiss bank accounts. In 1986, there was a popular revolt against him, and he fled in shame to exile in France.
Well, cut 25 years to today. Baby Doc just shocked the world with his return to Haiti. To help in reconstruction efforts after the earthquake. Or, as prosecutors are sanely contending, to try to snake his frozen funds from his Swiss bank accounts, which doesn’t look like it’s going to work out too well for him. He said through his attorneys that he wants access to funds frozen in Switzerland to “contribute to the reconstruction,” but no one’s buying it. In his next breath, he gave up his true intent: “ultimately, if we accomplish our purpose, I would expect to be paid. I’m no altruist.”
The understatement of his carreer was not lost on Hatian authorities, who promptly arrested the dictator for atrocities committed during his 15 years of rule. He’s been charged with embezzlement, fraud, and crimes against humanity. But, not everyone hopes he rots in a cell. Can you guess who still supports him?
If you guessed the Republican party, you would have guessed correctly. The lowball politician who’s taken the lobbying job as this dictator’s point man in his defense and flailing image re-brand is none other than Bob Barr, the GOP hack who led the charge against Bill Clinton during Blow Job Gate. That the GOP doesn’t even hide their support of dictators and terrorists while their mouthpiece lunatics like Limbaugh and Glenn Beck continue to clinically project to the world that it is actually the Democrats who are doing it is just surreal.
