This is Fascism. It creeps into our collective consciousness. Just. Like. This. When the watchers don’t allow themselves to be watched, and throw people in jail who do for 15 years, fascism has a firm foot in your door.
Illinois, long known for brutal police tactics, is leading the way into this new far-right paradigm. Two Chicago residents, Christopher Drew, a 60 year-old teacher and artist, and Tiawanda Moore, a retired dancer, have been charged with ‘eavesdropping’ for filming violent police beatings without first asking the officers if it was OK to let the world know they were violating the constitutional rights of their fellow citizens.
They may be going to prison for fifteen years so the State can protect the frightening self-proclaimed right of its ‘law enforcement’ officers to violate the laws they are supposed to be enforcing.
The ACLU has stepped in to defend these two patriotic citizens, filing suit against the City of Chicago, but predictably, the City of Chicago court system has thrown it out. It is currently being appealed.
Mark Donahue, president of the Fraternal Order of Police, publicly stated that the Police are fully in support of using the state’s eavesdropping law out of context to protect them from the long arm of the law themselves. He claims that when citizens monitor their law enforcement officeers too carefully when they break the law, that it “can affect how an officer does his job on the street.”
Indeed. Which would be the point of doing it.
Be careful Illinois residents, but stand firm in your right to keep those we trust with our safety and welfare honest and in line. You will NOT go to prison for this duty. The right-wing shall be quelled at every attempt to strip us of our rights as American citizens. Keep your camera focused on their every misdeed! (New York Times)
