I don’t use my email accounts nearly as much as I used to. The parsley of communication now filters through social media accounts. When I log in for business and the more formal stuff, there tends to pile up the more SPAMMISH letters. Annoying, sure you can relate.
Here in the WordPress journal-o-sphere, something like that happens. And, doesn’t. Let me explain:
SPAMMERS (a lot of them in Russia, BTW) cater to peoples’ egos, sending out mass compliment campaign letters. They are like a virus. People initiate communication with really bad wolves in sheeps’ clothing. They end up inviting vampires in their homes. Give up personal information and put the Journal author in real jeopardy. Financially and personally. These SPAMMERS are HACKERS and they know how to manipulate you.
Fortunately, a company called “Akismet“ is contracted by WordPress to filter out these SPAMMERS comments before you ever see them, rendering them harmless. I just logged into the “dashboard” and saw the crazy number of SPAM messages they filtered out:
This stuff is meta. Kind of. It’s a look under the Magnana Mouse hood, but it’s also a look at some of those cyber-defenses to the types of Russian hacking scumbags who attack US business, political system, and citizenry.
From Akismet’s website about what they do:
“Akismet is an advanced hosted anti-spam service aimed at thwarting the underbelly of the web. It efficiently processes and analyzes masses of data from millions of sites and communities in real time. To fight the latest and dirtiest tactics embraced by the world’s most proficient spammers, it learns and evolves every single second of every single day. Because you have better things to do.”
Disclaimer: no one writing or researching at Magnana Mouse works in any way for Akismet.
