I was really planning on giving Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez the benefit of the doubt that she could work within the Democratic Party as an idealistic, young first-timer who slayed Goliath. But, then, this:
Basically, Crowley wasn’t expecting his district had been chosen by the Bern-or-Bust revolutionaries to sneak Bull Durham into the NY-14 and surprise attack an incumbent in true surprise fashion.
Sarandon tweeted about Cortez before the primary:
“On June 26th we have a chance to prove that real Democrats who only answer to their constituents, can win against Dems beholden to corporate money. “
That is heroic and exciting (minus Susan Sarandon being part of it).
The David / Goliath part is always inspiring. Of course, it would have been nice had it been against a candidate that wasn’t a valued member of the force defending us all against Trump and a rabid neo-Nazi Republican party.
In the middle of a battle.
I mean, Cowley was set to take over for Pelosi to make him the Speaker of the House. A Speaker of the House representing the NY-14.
Oops. In the best case scenario, the people of the NY-14 just followed Bull Durham off a cliff.
I guess not everyone was thinking too far ahead. But, Susan Sarandon; Bernie Sanders; and Jeff Weaver were always about the magic populism NOW. Their shortsightedness helped bring us a Trump venereal disease into our pants.
It’s still OK that Ocasio-Cortez won. She’ll be taken under the wings of Democrats she is very junior to. She may grow into a fine representative in the future. Unfortunately, the seniority that Crowley earned doesn’t transfer to toddlers, and the NY-14 will not have a representative on any committees — let alone chairing any, as their former representative did.
We just need to keep an eye on her like we keep an eye on Bernie and how we did with LIEberman and Webb. They are all invasive species that can serve purpose to the greater whole. If they’re managed correctly.
Just poor, poor NY-14. It’s like waking up with a Nov 9th 2016 hangover all over again.
Here are some of the responsibilities that Crowley was trusted with. Honors that NY-14 won’t be burdened with anymore:
Crowley was the Democratic Caucus Chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives, the 4th highest leadership position in the House Democratic Caucus.
Sarandon said that TO HELL WITH HIM. The crook was “beholden to corporate money.”
Sure, Susan. Your sage wisdom helped bring us Trump, and this one just cost the NY-14 all of this:
Rep. Joe Crowley had a coveted seat on the powerful Ways and Means Committee. He was on the Subcommittee on Social Security and the Subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures. Ms. Cortez sure won’t be near those seats.
Crowley was the co-chair of the Committee on Irish Affairs. He was the co-chair of the Rare Disease Congressional Caucus. He was He was the co-chair of the Congressional Musicians Caucus. He was the founder and Chair of the Bangladesh Caucus. He was the founder and Chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian-Americans. He was the former co-chair of the Animal Protection Caucusl He was a member of the Congressional Arts Caucus, the Congressional Historic Preservation Caucus, the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus, the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus, the National Service Caucus, and the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus.
Since 2005, he has consistently received ratings of 100% from NARAL, and 0% from the National Right to Life Committee.
In 2011, he opposed a bill that would have banned taxpayer funding for abortions. In the 2010 election he was endorsed by Planned Parenthood. In 2018, Crowley received a voting record of 100% from Planned Parenthood
Since 2007, he has received a rating of 100% from the American Public Health Association, American Nurses Association, and the National Breast Cancer Coalition.
Crowley has fought against the practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) both abroad and in the United States. In 2010, he introduced the Girls Protection Act of 2010, which would criminalize the transport of a female under the age of 18 years old to undergo FGM.
Crowley has been a consistent supporter of the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (known as “Obamacare” or “ACA”). On March 22, 2010, he said, “I support the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, a historic measure that will put families first when it comes to accessing health care coverage.” He opposed repealing the act and voted against a repeal on January 19, 2011. Also in 2011, he held an event to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the bill’s passage.
In 2015, he proposed a bill with Representative Sheila Jackson Lee encouraging the collection of data on the prevalence of FGM and create a plan to better prevent the practice, which is illegal in the United States.
In 2017, Crowley signed on to H.R. 676, The Expanded and Improved Medicare for All Act in the House of Representatives. This bill was introduced by Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders in September 2017.
Crowley is a heavy critic of President Trump’s plan to build a wall on the U.S.–Mexico border and his decision to end DACA and Temporary Protected Status protection for qualifying immigrants in 2017. In 2017, Crowley introduced a bill that would grant green cards to undocumented workers who helped to recover and clean up New York City after the terrorist attacks on September 11.
Crowley holds the view “that reducing barriers to investment, creating opportunities for small businesses, and providing equitable working conditions for all Americans can and should be part of our national economic policy” He has supported federal spending as a way to increase economic growth. In 2008, he endorsed the Financial Asset Purchase Authority and Tax Law Amendments which established the Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP) and allowed the Secretary of the Treasury to buy assets from troubled financial institutions.
Crowley has advocated tax increases on the highest tax brackets, tax cuts for the middle class, and reduced defense spending.
When serving on the Ways and Means Committee he stated, “I really don’t see how it’s justifiable or sensible to give a tax cut to the wealthiest among us, but at the same time increase taxes on U.S. soldiers.” He also applauded the 2009 Budget for ending the Alternative Minimum Tax, and ensuring tax cuts for 23 million middle class Americans. In 2011, he opposed a bill that appropriated funds to the defense budget.
In 2017, Crowley opposed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, saying its only goal was to give more tax cuts to America’s top 1% than the working class. In December 2017, Crowley said in a floor speech, “It’s a scam and the American people know it. Is this a bill that helps people who are living paycheck to paycheck? Hell no.”
Crowley has proposed legislation to improve conditions for renters in his district. In September 2017, he introduced the Rent Relief Act, which would give a refundable tax credits to renters.
Crowley has a 2016 score of 95% from the League of Conservation Voters.
He was a member of the Friends of Ireland Caucus. He has worked on peace efforts for those involved in the conflict in Northern Ireland and securing refuge for those affected by the conflict. Crowley spoke out against President Trump’s effort to eliminate the position of United States Special Envoy for Northern Ireland. Eventually, Trump reversed this decision. Crowley was named Irish-American of the year by the Irish Echo in 2018.
Just so EVERYONE knows, Sarandon and Bernie didn’t help rid NY-14 of some evil DINO blue-dog type. They gutted it of the best Liberal hope for it to thrive, as IT WAS ALREADY DOING. No matter what comes from the Cortez candidacy — assuming she wins the general election — the district went from driving a Lexus to getting the feet horseshoe’d up for a good Flinstones car ride. Congrats NY-14 for voting as DUMB as the Deplorables did when they elected Trump.
With Sarandon and Bernie’s help, BTW.
